Review of Pride and Prejudice (1940) by Janna M — 22 Nov 2009
How can you go wrong with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier? They are so great as Elizabeth and Darcy, that I find it hard for anyone else to live up to these characterizations. People I know who do not like this version object to the farce and absurdity that the adapters focused on, but I say, "Isn't that what Austen was writing about?" And did you know that Aldous Huxley wrote the screen play based on a play? How much more absurd can you get? I think it's an absolute must see if you love the story, but can't stand the book!
