Review of Pride and Glory (2008) by Ameline Y — 18 Jun 2009
Tip of the hat to the casting department of pride and glory, edward norton, colin farrell and jon voight all excell in the roles given to them in this cop drama. As dirty cop movies go it is pretty generic, there is a little lack of action at times but this is more a charcter piece that questions the ideaological values rather than a all guns blazing shoot em up as the title may falsly infer.
PnG has some very gripping and enticing moments, a particular scene with colin farrell questioning a man using his baby in his interogation method is particularly distressing. But it is also in this shcoking way that the movie finds it sownfalls, where it is ungeneric in the way it provides a look at regular cops and the event s that transpire, it remians true to hollywood form making events become tired and predictable.
this is the generic value that when somebody does something bad i.e. threaten a woman or child or kill, you already know that they have sealed their fate before the closing credits. As the film nears its climax having seen the previous events transpire and knowing/ seeing this generic value play out in films time and time agian, what should be and emotional and hard hitting finale become predictable and a little weak.
But this is not to say it is not worth watching, it has an enticing element to it, even if just to watch a master class in role emersion with a good overal cast and in particular three fantastic believable and engaging performances from the main trio of leading men.
Not a classic by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly an intriguing and thoughtful film.
