Review of Pride (2014) by Ted N — 26 Sep 2014
Gay and lesbian activists from Marchmont Street decide to show solidarity with the miners of Onllwyn. Was very nervoous aboout this film, but was won over by its strong and positive storyline and sharp writing.
It could have been s awful - but it avoids being over sentimental, overly gruesome, too camp and too Welsh. Most dangerous of all, the accents on display from non-natives are pretty creditable (Imelda Staunton's is the worst, but I have heard SO many worse still, not least from Monica Dolan who thankfully plays a character from Bromley).
Period detail immaculate. Heart strings twanged but not snapped. Cockles warmed, but not fried. And if you ever get the chance to 'Go down Swansea for a big lezz-up' with the wonderful Menna Trussler (b.
Swanssea 1937) I'd take her up on the offer if I were you. Apart from making some of us feel old, it also makes some of us hanker for times when politics was about class, like it should be, and there was a Labour movement which remembered that.
