Review of Pride (2014) by Matt C — 04 Jul 2017
I had never seen a trailer for this nor had I read any reviews, so when I saw the universal praise for this movie, I was kind of taken aback. This isn't a ton different than other feel-good dramedies: its character arcs are predictable and while its heart is in the right place, it occasionally falls into sentimentality to make you feel good, and more than one would expect this movie to.
It's not like it's a mess; the overbearing music and wear-your-heart-on-your-sleeve-at-all-times direction seems to be what's the most manipulating (for lack of a better word). What's odd, though, is that I only one two of the characters' names and that this is way less affecting than it should be.
The clear positive here is the acting and I enjoyed seeing Paddy Considine in a less comedic role; I really liked him in Hot Fuzz and The World's End so it was a bit refreshing to see him do something slightly different.
Other than the humor working about half of the time, I don't understand the love for this movie. Also, it's two hours due to excessive subplots. I don't get why filmmakers can't just cut their own movies to what's really needed.
6.3/10, okay, one thumb down, average, etc.
