Review of Pride (2009) by David H — 16 Feb 2008
Based on the true life story of Jim Ellis who founded a Philadelphia inner city African American swim team. Jim is played by Terrence Howard and is joined in a real decent performance by Bernie Mac. Also great roles by Alphonso McAuley, Regine Nehy, Nate parker, Kevin Phillips, Scott Reeeves, Evan Ross, Gary Sturgis.
The story jumped a bit in the beginning. It was hard to realize the progress they could make at first but the film settled right in and started showing not only all the hardships faced by the main characters as they faced their own inner enemies but the discrimination faced by all as African Americans tred upon a traditionally white sport in the city at that time.
Yes, the film is a bit sappy in places in the respect that Howard overdid the tears but I recommend this film for it's portrayal of a man who transformed a neighborhood, provided hope to its kids and created leaders who would have otherwise fallen prey to crime and drugs.
Very well done and great music from start to finish.
