Review of Pride (2007)

By John Beifuss (1,947) for Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) (1,944) on 18 Jun 2007

Directed by Zimbabwean-born Sunu Gonera, who seems fascinated with 1970s American 'ghetto' atmosphere; he overdoses viewers on afros, hoop…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Elizabeth Weitzman (1,905) for New York Daily News (5,623) on 04 Apr 2007

This is an inspirational movie that really touches the heart…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Brent Simon (1,142) for FilmStew.com (638) on 27 Mar 2007

By painting in such broad strokes and playing up race-baiting that Ellis says he didn't experience, are they not couching the movie as somehow…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Pete Hammond (936) for Maxim (189) on 25 Mar 2007

Swimming isn't exactly the most cinematic of sports and unfortunately the script gets waterlogged well before the big finale…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Harvey S. Karten (2,210) for Compuserve (1,948) on 25 Mar 2007

Sure it's predictable, but its virtues include its originality of theme (how often do we see films of African-American swim teens…

Review of Pride (2007)

By David Foucher (211) for EDGE Boston (239) on 25 Mar 2007

This surprisingly entertaining movie defies its formulaic plot and delivers a well-executed tale of team spirit…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Eric D. Snider (2,489) for EricDSnider.com (2,026) on 24 Mar 2007

I couldn't help thinking a documentary about the man would be so much more interesting than a watered-down, by-the-numbers dramatization…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Cherryl Dawson And Leigh Ann Palone (956) for TheMovieChicks.com (956) on 24 Mar 2007

It flounders in the shallow end for a really long time... by the time the story had a chance to move me, I was just ready to get out of the pool…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Jean Lowerison (512) for San Diego Metropolitan (486) on 24 Mar 2007

Howard and Mac play well off each other, the kids are fine and the film makes the points it wants to make…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Bill Zwecker (128) for Chicago Sun-Times (7,580) on 23 Mar 2007

Pride is a lovingly-presented homage to the heroism of Jim Ellis' life and his life's work…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Wesley Morris (1,967) for Boston Globe (6,852) on 23 Mar 2007

It's called Pride, and, while it's neither as socially urgent as Freedom Writers nor as danceable and soapy as Stomp the Yard, it's better…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Sara Michelle Fetters (1,688) for MovieFreak.com (1,674) on 23 Mar 2007

Thankfully the movie is able to overcome this familiarity by being monstrously entertaining, Howard giving the picture a stirring central figure…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Angela Baldassarre (259) for Sympatico.ca (259) on 23 Mar 2007

Pride is just another in a long list of true-life inspirational sports movies that offers absolutely nothing new, borrowing every maudlin cliché…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Michelle Alexandria (310) for Eclipse Magazine (446) on 23 Mar 2007

I've come to realize that while I enter every sports movie with a great amount of disdain, I always come out feeling inspired…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Daniel Eagan (552) for Film Journal International (5,095) on 23 Mar 2007

What Gonera does well is to invest the film and its characters with Ellis' bywords--pride, determination and resilience…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Vince Koehler (156) for Entertainment Spectrum (633) on 23 Mar 2007

Overall, it was a good family movie that shows us once again how important it is to respect all human beings regardless of race and to believe…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Fred Topel (1,193) for Can Magazine (288) on 23 Mar 2007

The real Jim Ellis surely did a wonderful thing for his community, but the most striking thing about seeing him in the end credits is that…

Review of Pride (2007)

By Ken Fox (1,094) for TV Guide (1,527) on 23 Mar 2007

Sadly, the only aspect of this well-intentioned film that doesn't feel completely formulaic is its refreshingly unromantic picture of an inner-city…

By Geoff Pevere (572) for Toronto Star (3,601) on 23 Mar 2007

It really has nothing to be proud of but a central performance much better than the movie itself deserves…
