Review of Prick Up Your Ears (1987) by Adhitama R — 06 Feb 2011
Clumsy biopic that borrows from both Citizen Kane (although it ultimately abandons that structure - to its detriment), and Amadeus. The end product is only sporadically interesting and rarely cinematic, buoyed by some terrific performances from Gary Oldman, Alfred Molina, Vanessa Redgrave, and an amusing little turn by the underrated Richard Wilson.
The dialogue is witty, but the lack of a cohesive, consistent story structure and a failure to actually dig deep into its subject leads me to consider this something of a misfire, albeit an interesting one.
