Review of Prick Up Your Ears (1987) by Briget 6 — 10 Jan 2009
Frears, Molina, OLDMAN. Need I go on? Alright, I will. Definitely one of the darkest films I've seen by Frears, though he succeeds in capturing the wild and free sides of Orton and his Halliwell, it also nails their dark sides, and there's a cold and chilling atmosphere throughout the entire film, almost depressing.
It captured the essence of their lives amazingly. So well, in fact, that it's almost difficult to understand their relationship, because it's such a complex one. Oldman and Molina are at the top of their game here, as Oldman is tamer here than he usually is wheras Molina is demented and disturbed.
It definitely leaves you chilled and haunted, thinking about its dark and brutal finish long after the film has ended.
