Review of Priceless (2006) by Jake — 25 Aug 2008
Spectacular costume and art direction set against the crisp palate of the Cote d'Azur, this French romantic comedy is a slice of fresh lemon torte - at once very sweet and yet sharp. Moral ambiguity aside, the evolution of the bartender to gigolo is a treat to watch as he masters the rules of the game while keeping an eye on the ultimate prize.
Audrey Tautou is successful in balancing the harsh edges of her character's profession with a waif-like vulnerability and is immensely likeable in this role. It is a little loose in the storytelling throughout, but each scene is stylized and such a visual pleasure it can be forgiven.
Released through Samuel Goldwyn, an American influence is seen in the style and rhythm of this comedy. This is not your typical absurdist French farce and it will appeal to a broader spectrum. Waving the blue white and red for Hors de Prix.
