Review of Priceless (2006) by Jason C — 26 Jan 2009
A delightfully amoral sojourn in sun drenched Lubitsch-land the like of which can only exist in the movies. Watch this film and fall in love with Mme Tautou.
Forget Beverly Hills. From Biarritz to Nice; nobody does "rich" like Europe. The shameless luxury of the French Riviera is the perfect stage for a this classy gold-digging rom-com. Before Hors de Prix, Tautou was to me, doe eyed and cutsie, but with the golden rays of summer bouncing of her endless wardrobe of sheer fitting chic, I suddenly began to feel my heart accelerating. Elegant, vulnerable, feisty, she is sublime.
Gad Elmaleh isn't the most handsome lead (he always looks a little pasty to me) but were he Brad Pitt there'd be no flick. He is fortunately a formidable comic actor with a charm, vulnerability and timing that renders his bellhop instantly likeable. They simply make a great pair, and watching the two of them spar in such elegant surroundings is the perfect vicarious holiday fling.
