Review of Priceless (2006) by Paul N — 17 Oct 2009
A forgettable movie with an unoriginal plot. It serves mostly as a mechanism for showcasing Audrey Tautou in as many provocative dresses as possible. While this is by no means unenjoyable in itself, it makes for a long two hours.
Gad Elmaleh is convincing more as the somewhat befuddled innocent he starts as, rather than the more capable manipulator that he supposedly transforms into. Tautou plays an older and more worldly-wise character than in Amelie, while retaining a doe-eyed innocence that at times makes her almost sympathetic in this movie. But never quite. Her cold calculations make her inevitable redemption all the less believable.
The backdrop of the French Riviera makes for a few nice shots, but otherwise is wasted. You won't kill yourself for watching this movie (or while watching it), but you can probably come up with a better use for an hour and a half of your time.
