Review of Pretty Persuasion (2005) by Rosalie L — 26 Apr 2008
What is at times a brilliant dark comedy bordering on Heathers or Election-like genius eventually buckles under the weight of its subject matter. It's as if the director couldn't find a balance between twisted, ironic humor and outright tragedy.
Thus, the audience is left feeling a bit out of sorts at the end. Are we meant to laugh? Cry? Shrug? Worth seeing for Evan Rachel Wood's outstanding performance, but not worth elevating to cult classic status.
