Review of Pretty Persuasion (2005) by Robert S — 11 Feb 2006
Pretty Persuasion is definity worth a sit through. The story is a bit bad at times. An arab friend of lead Evan Rachel Wood's is handled clumsily. However, the performance of Wood shines in this picture. As an amoral self-centered bitch you'll find few better on celluloid.
The movie takes a stab a certain taboos in society sometimes hitting sometimes missing. On the one hand watching Selma Blair do a seductive dance in a schoolgirl's outfit for husband Ron Livingstone is a pleasure but on the other a viewer wonders why Blair can't see what is obvious about her husband's fantasy like the audience can.
James Woods gives a fair performance as the disinterested self-absorbed image conscience father. However in the 'kiss-off' scene between father and daughter at the end one wonders why his character is never taken to task like Wood's.
The reasoning behind Wood's female piranha actions at the end is a age old one. I wish there was more to it here.
That being said Evan Rachel Wood's performance is worth watching at least once.
