Review of Pretty in Pink (1986) by Ross M — 23 Aug 2009
A nice teen drama and it even had characters to relate to.
Written by John Hughes, this film is his all over despite being directed by Howard Deutch (who did a good job, don't get me wrong). This is perhaps Hughes' most realistic screenplay; realistic characters in realistic situation and a clear understanding of teenage trials and tribulations. Sure, it may be rather dated by now, having that unmistakable 80's feeling but its emotional impact still remains.
Jon Cryer is perhaps the best actor in the film. His touching portrayal of Duckie really lifts the film. He makes hischaracter endearing, even when he acts like a twat, because we cleary understand where he is coming from. The best actress is obviously Molly Ringwald playing her character in a subtle way. It is a far cry from her performance as the spoilt brat in The Breakfast Club. Here she plays the complete opposite and does so perfectly.
It may not be perfect but it is a realistic, humourous and bittersweet take on young life and young love.
