Review of Pretty Baby (1950) by Kelley — 27 May 2008

It's funny reading others' reviews of this film; i.e, I would never say Brooke Shields "liked playing jailbait roles as a kid" What?!?! I would wager a pretty good guess, that she was simply too young to determine what role would be right for her and what roles would be absolutely inappropriate. As was this - she was too young. That does not negate the fact that this "premise" is a reality of life. Sadly, and reprehensible but true. Nor does her mother's irresponsibility and even exploitation of her child negate that Malle made an incredibly rich, evocative film here. It nearly whisks you away and into that realm.

Thank God she does seem to have grown up quite nicely.
