Review of Prêt-à-Porter (1994) by Jennifer A — 25 Mar 2006
I'm beginning the rather lengthy task of entering into the database every film I have seen, at least those I have a decent memory of. Some may have the briefest of reviews while many will just have a number. Those films that I consider personal favorites and/or those that have some historical signficance I will add later when I have time for more lengthy reviews.
Courage Under Fire, directed by Edward Zwick, is a Gulf War drama about a a captain named Karen Walden (Meg Ryan) who is about to become the first woman to recieve a medal of honor for combat. The story is told through a series of flashbacks during a series of inquiries from soldiers that survived the incident in which Walden was killed. Denzel Washington heads the investigation. The film also stars Matt Damon, Lou Diamond Phillips, Michael Moriarity, Bronson Pinchot and Scott Glenn. It's a pretty effective drama.
The Bone Collector, directed by Philip Noyce, is a psychological thriller about two cops in search of a brutal serial killer. The film stars Denzel Washington and Angela Jolie as the investigating cops. It's a far cry from Seven.
Ready To Wear (Pret-a-Porter), is Robert Altman's disappointing look at the fashion world. The rather impressive ensemble cast features Tim Robbins, Sophia Loren, Julia Roberts, Kim Basinger, Marcello Mastroianni, Danny Aiello, Lili Taylor, Lauren Bacall, Tracy Ullman, and many others. The film is amusing at times (mostly trying to follow the cast) but really never goes anywhere. Too bad.
B.A.P.S. is just B.A.D.
Milk Money, directed by Richard Benjamin, is the story of some boys who pool their money together to visit a prostitute. One boy decides she would make a great wife for his single dad, and she soon masquerades as a soccer mom. Stars Melanie Griffith and Ed Harris.
