Review of Premonition (2004) by Jay X — 14 Dec 2009
Sandra Bullock is good enough to carry most of the movie. It's a fairly entertaining and emotional thriller. There are plenty of plot holes, not the least of which is... well.. the whole plot. I love time-bending movies but the premise here seemed arbitrary at best and downright nonsensical at worst.
Even in a movie like Groundhog Day in which there is no explanation for the supernatural event that the protagonist undergoes (and like that movie, here Bullock's character is the only one who notices the upset), at least the audience gets to understand WHAT is happening and a hint as to WHY.
The HOW is immaterial. In Premonition, not even WHAT is completely clear. There seems to be no method to the order in which she experiences the days of this week, but yet her experience builds in a linear fashion.
If it sounds confusing, it's not quite as much so on the screen. The plot allows you to take it all in, and the focus on the characters and their emotions pulls you along until the end. It's only in hindsight that things begin to unravel.
