Review of Predestination (2013) by Joan P R — 18 Apr 2015
This is a clever idea, and well acted, but in the end it feels far too much like a game. Far too implausible. This is not just about suspending disbelief about time travel and its paradoxes for the sake of interesting story telling , it goes at a much deeper level, biologically and philosophically.
Now a big SPOILER is coming, so do not read on if you have not yet seen the film. For a character to be both herself, her mother, her father, her kidnapper, and his killer, he/she must be very very stupid, as well as a metaphysical impossibility.
So I would treat this as a thought experiment - but not a great existential SF movie such as let us say Tarkovski's Solaris or Blade Runner.
