Review of Predator 2 (1990) by Blais E — 10 Dec 2010
The solid, hyper-kinetic and pulse-pounding sequel to AH-NOLD's earlier exciting and ground-breaking sci-fi actioner "Predator", and equally as good. It starts with a bang and continues that manic pace throughout, here dropping the horriffic hunter into late 90's L.
A., right smack-dab in the middle of a bloody turf war between vicious Colombian and Jamaican rival drug gangs, offering easy pickins' for the tarantula-faced trophy-taker. Poor Danny Glover as headstrong Det.
Hannigan, and his mixed-bag of cops (Bill Paxton, Maria Conchita Alonso, and Ruben Blades-) try to make heads or tails of the bloodier-than-usual goings-on, as well as stay out of the way of a group of government pricks led by toothy Gary Busey, who, as it turns out, have been hot on the alien's heels for decades.
All the while, the Predator continues along his bloodily-merry way, adding human chotskies to his beloved trophy-case, reveling in all the human confusion caused by his antics. Although Glover makes for an unlikely action-hero, he acquits himself well here, instilling his character with admirable and very-human qualities.
The rest of the cast turn in admirable perfs as well, with pock-marked Robert Davi (As Harrigan's unsympathetic superior-), Calvin Lockhart (As the ghoulish and dread-locked "King Willie", voodoo-mystic/leader of the Jamaican Posses-), and frog-faced Morton Downey, Jr.
, here essentially playing himself as a loud-mouthed talk-show reporter, the most notable. A gory, exhaustive, and fun-filled thrill-ride that'll leave you well-spent after viewing it! Look in the Pred's trophy case towards the end of the film and you'll see a T-Rex and "Alien" skull proudly on display.
