Review of Predator 2 (1990) by Steve W — 12 Jul 2010
Compare this movie to the first one and it's a miss. Compare it to the spin-offs, it gets better with comparison. The first half is a messy and dodgy action movie, and the second saves all of it when it begins to mix in suspense with the action.
One of the film's problems is that there are way too many things going on. A There's a city at war with rival gang wars, an alien hunter, cops in the middle, and a secret government organization trying to capture the Predator.
The dialogue is cheesy. There's too much forced swearing or exposition dialogue. It does have that 80's charm to it, but not even Alan Silvestri's score can save it.
Then comes the excellent second half. The main character Harrigan finds out the secret government squad trying to capture the alien, and has a swell homage to the midpoint in Aliens.
Harrigan ends up dueling the Predator until the tense climax. This is by far one of the best action set pieces, due to the score and direction.
Its not as good as the first film, but its good enough to be entertaining on its own merit.
