I can understand why Hollywood chooses to nominate first-time performances as a way to generate interest, but it should stop. Not that Gabourey Sidibe didn't do a fine job, just that it wasn't remarkable.
Mo'Nique's performance, however, was amazing. But the reason this movie is so engrossing is because of the story it tells, and by putting forth the reminder that we have it good. The film is, quite simply, humbling.
