Review of Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire (2009) by Kerry K — 16 Apr 2011
This story focuses on the life of Precious Jones, an obese teenager who suffers mental, physical and sexual abuse by her parents. Pregnant with her second child to her own father, she is kicked out of high school and enrolled in an alternative schooling programme which finally gives her the strength and motivation to change the course of her life.
The acting in this film is extremely powerful and really packs a punch - especially Mo'Nique's character who is simply a disgusting human being. The only part of the film I didn't enjoy was the 'dream sequences' as I felt they interrupted the flow of the film.
Although I do understand why they were used, they just didn't work for me and I didn't feel they added any extra to the film. An emotional, disturbing and brilliant movie.
