Review of Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire (2009) by Michael K — 30 Apr 2011
There are some really shocking moments in this film. The subject matter is pretty dark, actually really dark and by the end one wondered if there would be any light at the end of the tunnel. Fortunately, the ending finally saw Precious break the cycle of abuse and self-loathing through meeting a nurturing teacher and by education. A great modern day parable.
Surprised to see Kravitz acting, but even more surprised by the performance of Mariah Carey no less. She played dowdy social worker to a tee without a single vibrato note.
If you want a happy-go-lucky superficial film, this isn't for you but if you want dark gritty themes, a sense of hope and positivity even from the most horrible of situations then this could be the ticket.
It's like Jamie Oliver's Dream School but set in Harlem. Only word of advice, watch the movie in widescreen...
