Review of Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire (2009) by Grant S — 25 Jun 2011
Great drama. Initially looks like just another person-pulls-themselves-out-of-poverty-by-their-bootstraps movie, but this is far more than that. The story is original, real, gritty and very harrowing. This may not necessarily be based on a true story, but it might as well have been. Sad once you realise that there probably are people out for whom this story is a reality.
Superb performances all round. Mo'Nique deserved her Best Supporting Actress Oscar, for her role as the evil mother. Gabourey Sidibe plays Precious, and too deserved her Oscar nomination. Paul Patton is gorgeous and great as the well-meaning teacher.
Casting pop stars Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz was inspired, especially Carey. She puts in a solid effort, and atones somewhat for Glitter.
A depressing and harrowing, but very thought-provoking and rewarding, movie.
