Boy did I pick the wrong movie to watch tonight!
This is a harsh and bleak movie about recovering your life when someone has mistreated you. It's also about how sometimes when you are down, you get more and more pressure piled on top o fyou.
Gabourey Sidibe is superb in the title role, playing a rounded and vulnerable human being. Paula Patton is superb as the teacher who believes in her. Mo'Nique is excellent as her shark/mother who is a terrifying presence on the screen. And Mariah Carey is surpsingly strong in her role as a social worker.
It's a very grim story and in places it's quite hard to stomach. But it's rarely too much or too harsh and in the end it delivers about the right note.
