A very powerful, brutal story involving issues of abuse and sexual assault, making this a very hard film to watch. Yet, even in the midst of such brutality and darkness, hope, accountability, discipline, guts, determination, and love prove strong.

(Watch for the red ribbon, the film's symbol of said hope.) One of those rare films that has such a profound and encouraging impact in the end, illustrating that hope always perseveres. With distant echoes to Alice Walker's "The Color Purple," there are also some odd juxtapositions of music incorporated in certain scenes.

Nevertheless, strong performances from Mo'Nique (a well-deserved Oscar win), Mariah Carey, Paula Patton, and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, with two climactic scenes that stand out. As one reviewer commented, "a worthwhile but brutal film.

" I couldn't agree more.
