Lee Daniels' style is surprisingly engrossing, often oscillating wildly between fantastic, surreal moments and the dour, muted reality of Precious' life. That style, along with a truly brutal yet nuanced performance from (Baltimore's own) Mo'Nique, makes an otherwise depressing film engaging enough to make the viewer want to stay on board.
