Review of Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire (2009) by James M — 21 Mar 2013
I spent 100 of the 109 minutes of this film crying or fighting back tears. And I mean that in the BEST POSSIBLE WAY. As a human being, man and teacher--this was one of the most disturbing, moving, affecting and powerful films I have seen in AGES. Astonishingly moving performances, a brilliant and well-nigh flawless script and sure-handed direction puts this film on my short list of best of the year. My only complaint is the over-use of the Indie "shaky-cam"--you know--the shuddery camera movement that moves about like sea-sickness and zooms in when you don't want it to.
On a side-note--my "In-theater" experience with this film was an education unto itself--sadly, one I'll never be able to share with my students.
