Review of Prayers for Bobby (2009) by Gary G — 26 Jan 2009
(4 stars out of 5) This movie hit so close to home for me I had a stomach ache about half way through and by the end I was ready to have an anxiety attack like I was reliving the experience all over again.
It's a really powerful film about the coming out process for a guy who's mother's religious convictions force her to turn her back on her son because she believes being gay is wrong and against the Bible's teachings.
Sigourney Weaver plays the mom in such a human way you empathize with her struggle as well--even though you know she's clearly in the wrong. He also struggles to accept himself and ultimately that self-loathing coupled with his mother's condemnation are his undoing.
There are more than a few scenes that are difficult to watch especially if you have tried to kill yourself for believing there is something seriously wrong for having these types of feelings. The struggle was so accurately portrayed if I wasn't watching it with someone else I may have turned it off.
This is a must-see for every high school student in America.
