Review of Prayers for Bobby (2009) by Maxim C — 17 Mar 2009
Prayers For Bobby is the true story of Mary Griffith a gay rights crusader whose own teenage son committed suicide because she refused to accept his homosexuality.
This is a very touching and moving movie,i cried almost all the way through the second half. The movie shows the struggles that young gay and lesbian people go through. Unlike other movies that deal with the same subject this movie did not hold back at all. When Bobby comes out to his parents and siblings his mother Mary who is very religious refuses to accept that he is gay,she loathes gay people and thinks they are sinners who will go to Hell so she attempts to "cure" Bobby, she uses several methods including fixing him up with a girl, sending him for therapy and leaving memos around the family home that have quotes from the Bible on.
The final scene was so beautiful that I could not stop crying,i felt very proud of all my friends who have faced this kind of ignorance and prejudice. I strongly recommend this movie to any parent who is unaccepting of their sons or daughters sexuality, please love your child for who they are before its too late.
