Review of Practical Magic (1998) by Rebecca H — 21 Jun 2009
A film seriously confused as to its own tone, this is clearly a novel adaptation that can't fit everything into a film and the characters are all underdeveloped as a result, making it difficult to care.
The soundtrack is intrusive and despite clearly being a drama, comedy music is often played making this feel like it has been marketed as a rom-com when the plot isn't at all. It is also clumsily directed.
The first third is all back story that we can't get into, the middle third should be the plot but is badly handled and described with banal characters and the final third introduces the romantic interest only to shove him back out again to make way for more unexplained, underdeveloped rubbish.
