Review of Potiche (1983) by Christos A — 07 Apr 2011
I rarely go into a movie knowing nothing about it. In this case, I was invited to the Opening Night of Filmfest DC a couple of hours before it started. Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu light up the screen because they play upon their former statuses as France's movie sex symbols, embracing and acting their current ages.
This film, set in 1977, explores gender relations within the framework of a farce that would make Almodovar proud. I think it would have been more interesting to set it in the modern day, to gauge how sexual politics have really changed over time.
