Review of Potiche (1983) by Matt S — 23 Apr 2011
Francois Ozon returns to the whimsy of "8 Women" with this charming comedy that reunites Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu on the big screen for this first time since 2004's "Changing Times.".
The film's title loosely translates to "trophy wife", what Deneuve's character has been for over 30 years. When she takes over for her husband's umbrella factory during a union dispute, she whips the business into shape and slowly reveals some long hidden secrets.
The story itself, dealing with sexual politics and women's liberation, could have taken a more daring path. Instead, it's a perfectly pleasant farce with wonderful actors that doesn't take itself too seriously.
This is far and away the best film from Ozon in years.
