Review of Potiche (1983) by Diana T — 24 Apr 2011
The rainy weather drove me to pick out this movie at a mall with indoor parking. As an escape from the recent tornado damage here, it was good light entertainment. Having to read subtitles rapidly interfered with my enjoyment of the costumes and sets from the 70's, which are very fine.
I did not find it that funny, merely humorous. It is refreshing to see a couple happily embrace affairs as the way to stay married and endure the man's lousy abrasive personality. The temporary success of Catherine's stint at manageing the factory would not surprise anybody.
Most successful housewives could do the job. Having her former lover abandon her in the middle of the country with no transportation home seemed ignorant. This movie feels like a Doris Day film from the 60's, without the happy youthfulness of Doris.
Watching a woman who is now in her late 60's looking good was nice. The Farrah Fawcet hairstyle on her daughter was lovely. It was great to see some of the styles of the 70's. This is definitely a film for a girls night out for women of a certain age.
