Review of Potiche (1983) by Warwick B — 06 Jul 2011
By acclaimed director Francois Ozon, Potiche is an adaptation of the 1970s farce.
Catherine Deneuve plays Suzanne, the submissive "trophy wife" to husband and factory owner Robert Pujol (Fabrice Luchini).
But life changes when the factory workers go on strike and Robert gets taken hostage and ends up being rushed into hospital. Suzanne has to step in and take charge. To help her get the workers back on side Suzanne calls on old flame and ex union leader and now Mayor Maurice (Gerard Depardieu).
While Robert is off recuperating from his ordeal Catherine takes over as boss and with help of her grown up children - daughter Joelle (Judith Godreche ) who dreads ending up like her mother and brother, Paul (Jeremie Renier),who is interested in the arts - revitalizes the business. Of course Robert can't cope that his wife can run things better than he can.
The changes in family dynamics has consequences for everyone, including Robert's secretary Nadege (Karin Viard).
Although dated and predictable, Portiche is a joyous romp, with loopy plot twists and turns.
