Review of Potiche (1983) by Paul W — 13 Jan 2013
A gentle call to arms against bourgeoisie complacency and misogyny - Catherine Deneuve is a marshmallowy delight as the sweet, soft, underestimated trophy wife who finds her bite again due to a workers uprising.
Adapted from a 70s play, the story takes place in 1977 whih is problematic - the veil of time abstracts the audience from empathising and allows us an out to write off the attitudes as of a bygone era, even though they readily apply today.
The 70s setting does allow some pleasing stylistic flourishes - think Terry and June meets Saturday night Fever.
