Review of Postman (1995) by Danjel H — 18 Sep 2008
It took me awhile to get around to seeing Kevin CostnerÂ?s post-apocalyptic debacle. While this is one of my favourite genreÂ?s, Costner is well down on my list of must see actors and this movie was so savagely reviewed and such a commercial flop that it almost ruined CostnerÂ?s career, so I wasnÂ?t anxious to ruin a weekend as well. But at $4.99 from Future Shop, it was cheaper than a rental, so I took the risk. And really, it isnÂ?t half as bad as I was led to believe. It wasnÂ?t half as good as it could have been either, but it was also not much worse than some of the turds Hollywood lays that make a 100 Million dollars.
There are plenty of fascinating ideas, many of them stolen from the 1960Â?s novel LuciferÂ?s Hammer. Costner is a pretty good director and his main character is well developed and likeable. The bad guys are interesting too, and the movie has a good pacing, for the first few hours anyway. The problems with this movie are mostly in the lame dialogue (You want a war? I will give you a war!) the loosy goosy editing (this could have been tightened up by about an hour) and Costners self love. There were a number of guffaw out loud moments, but really, in the end it was fun and entertaining, just like a movie should be.
