Review of Postcards from the Edge (1990) by Max W — 26 Jun 2007
Good film overall. Great direction from the legendary Nichols. Great script based on Carrie Fisher's semi-autobiographical story. Streep and MacLaine work well because they feed off each other, and their terrific performances are a testament.
Streep was a Best Actress nominee in 90, but the shocker is that MacLaine was not nominated at all for Best Supporting. This angers me. What I love about their relationship in the film is that you can see their Hollywood glamour so stripped down and actually see what lies beneath the surface.
The prominent example was where MacLaine, fresh from a car wreck, lies in the hospital without her wig and makeup. The audience is actually seeing right into the person on a deeper level---how the makeup and the appearance is simply a veil for the real person inside.
