POST MORTEM (1999).

Directed by Louis Bélanger.

Starring Sylvie Moreau, Gabriel Arcand, Hélène LoisellePost Mortem is Louis Bélanger's first film, and what a film it is. Great directorial debut about redemption, faith - in some sort of way - life and trying to get out of your small existence. The movie is seperated in three parts; Linda, Ghislain and Odieuse Félicité (Hateful Felicity). In the first part you follow, Linda, a single mom on welfare who goes out with rich men at night to steal their money. She is basically trying to make a decent living to fulfill hers and her daughter's dreams but unfortunately she dies. In the second part you have Ghislain who has just been arrested by the police for rape. He is a lonely man and he tells his story of how it all happens. In the third part you discover how the two characters are linked, what secret brings 'em together.Post Mortem isnt very complex, its quite simple actaully but the simplicity makes this film very effective, emotionally and psychologically. There are scenes of full frontal nudity for both characters and that doesnt come from free its to show their vulnerability and how fragile they are.Sylvie Moreau - usually a funny girl - gives a pretty solid performance while Gabriel Arcand - always deep - plays his character all in tones. Louis Bélanger's direction may seem clumsy at times but still he is in control of his film and he has some good dialogues, deep ones and funny ones. A good study of complex and troubled characters with a great score fitting the film perfectly to give the right strange mood it needs.
