Review of Post Grad (2009) by Mike M — 22 Dec 2009
A real weird one: a pep rally for the US economy disguised as harmless sleepover fare, with a heroine hellbent on securing blue-chip employment for herself... It's of note chiefly for rounding up some very likable actors and then giving them not one worthwhile thing to do.
As our heroine's dad, Keaton's major contribution is to run things over and repeatedly step in cat poop; Lynch and J.K. Simmons are barely there; and it's a misguided choice of star vehicle for Bledel, so smart, funny and sensitive on TV's "Gilmore Girls", and here restyled as a conformist automaton determined to do what's expected of her - who's only sympathetic because she can't get what she wants.
Jenson slips The Kooks and Lily Allen on the soundtrack to flag up some indie credibility, but really, her film is enough to make John Hughes movies seem like hotbeds of progressive thinking: joyless, state-sponsored propaganda designed to reassure college-age viewers it'll all be OK if their qualifications suddenly hold all the value of flip-flops in a blizzard.
