Review of Post Grad (2009) by Grami Tami N — 07 Apr 2010
Poor Michael Keaton. From acting in the great, early Batman movies and the entertaining Beetlejuice, he's reduced to playing daddy in these terrible rom-coms (The First Daughter, Herbie: Fully Loaded).
Not that Post Grad is terrible; it's just ho-hum, forgettable and poorly directed. It's reminiscent of a badly written family sitcom, what with everyone trying to be quirky and hokey and funny.
And with that, I say again... Poor Michael Keaton. He tried so hard to be the lovably goofy dad that it bordered on a being a desperate performance. It was painful to watch. The story centers on Alexis Bledel's character's pursuit of her dream job and her eventual realization that all work and no play makes Ryden Malby (that's her name; stupid, I know) a dull kid.
Her dysfunctional family was supposed to drive that message home, but it gave the film a hokey, distracting feel instead. As for the leads, Alexis Bledel is charming and should be doing more romantic comedies, but she was swallowed up by the meandering script.
This was not a very good movie.
