Review of Poseidon (2006) by Yae Y — 16 Aug 2009
This kind of disaster movie is fueled by the word(s) "set-piece". The CGI boat that stars throughout is an absolute wonder and triumph in special effects, we now at the stage where CGI can place actors in any situation without the arduous task of building tons of models or sets.
"Poseidon" is a remake of 1972's "The Poseidon adventure". Set entirely aboard the Poseidon Cruise Ship which at the strike of the 2006 new year is hit by an enormous 'rogue wave' which capsizes it. An interesting idea? I thought so. But it is eventually a ploy for the usual, start here, go here, get rescued, lose a couple of supporting characters and one big actor along the way, feel good BS ending. No matter how good, it is always hard to consider condoning a remake, which is, now-a-days, a maggot that feasts on the flair of the original producing box office gross.
