Popstar was as surprising as it was hilarious. Initially watching the trailers I thought "here we go this is gonna be that dumb comedy I hate but my non cinephile friends love" but I was shocked to find a movie that is clever in almost every way.

The film plays itself like a documentary of Andy Sambergs characters Connor as a musician in modern times. Yet the movie feels more like a satire on the music industry today. Now not to say this film rivals classic satires like The Naked Gun series or Hot fuzz but it still offers some near genius writing on certain subject matters.

Their were several times in the film where I was laughing my butt off and then after the laughs went away thought to myself "wow that was really clever. " This film has its fair share of laughs but also has some decent dramatic moments as well.

Combine that with solid performances, hilarious cameos, and songs that will be stuck in your head and you get a really enjoyable film. The negatives come in to play when you realize the film is actually a lot shorter than it feels.

Not all of the jokes land and when the fall flat they fall hard. It's a cliché riches to rags back to riches story but nobody should go into the film expecting an Oscar worthy screenplay. If you're looking for a good laugh and a smart satire on the modern day music industry I'd recommend catching this one.
