Review of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016) by Ben T — 08 Jun 2016
"Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" is a musical mockumentary that could only come from The Lonely Island. I love their SNL digital shorts and this movie has that same humor and silliness that those shorts have.
The satire on pop culture and fame is actually very clever, with many jabs at celebrities and artists that were all hysterical. The cameos worked really well and some of them had me rolling on the floor because they were so so funny and clever.
What surprised me most was how clever the satire was, even when some of the jokes around it were stupid, but in a funny way. This film never reaches truly stupid humor, but almost a brilliant form of stupid humor at times.
I was so excited when I heard that The Lonely Island were making a movie and this did not disappoint, in fact, it kind of surprised me. This is a fun mockumentary and one of the best comedies I've seen in a while.
It's a must see for fans of clever satire and The Lonely Island's signature style of humor.
