Review of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016) by Christopher B — 25 Oct 2016
Yes, it's Spinal Tap for the 21st Century, but that doesn't make it feel any less original or fun. It's a light-hearted mockumentary that pokes fun at the silliness of the pop music world and its influence on pop culture, but there's a tongue-in-cheek respect and admiration deep down (as evidenced by the numerous celebrity cameos sprinkled throughout the movie).
The Lonely Island's unique blend of energy and talent makes a very professional send-up of music, celebrity, and mockumentaries themselves. It also helps that the songs themselves are fun to listen to, a treat that even Spinal Tap didn't accomplish as well.
While Popstar isn't as important an entry into the world of comedy as Spinal Tap is, it is still worth watching as an entry in and of itself. #sohumble.
