Review of Pontypool (2009) by Ashley T — 27 Feb 2010
Severely disappointing turn from a director I usually really admire. While the concept is intriguing, it didn't work at all for me cinematically, and may have been better suited as a novel or a play.
A virus of sorts being spread by the English language? That's a plot born for the page or the stage. Steven McHattie is interesting to watch for a few minutes, but the character isn't very compelling beyond the half hour point when he's given nothing to do but talk.
Bruce McDonald is a visually stunning director, I don't know why he chose to limit himself to a genre flick set entirely in a dreary basement.
