Review of Pontypool (2009) by Rodney S — 12 Sep 2010
Take the central premise behind "The Crazies", and add a huge plot point, and make it a psychological thriller, and you have a pretty damn good movie. The whole movie for the most part takes place in a small radio station in a small town in Canada.
Central characters are the new DJ (who looks a little like Lance Hendrickson), the female producer and another lady handling the phones. Strange things start to happen on the DJ's first day, as mob reports are heard in the town, and a reporter of theres in the field, reports people are chanting nonsense and killing one another very brutally.
Zombies? Nope, these are called conversationalists, or something like that. What the hell? It's a strange weird virus that is being spread, and making people go, shall I say deadly crazy. I don't want to give anymore hints about the plot, because it probably would make little sense.
Even watching the movie, which has only one bloody scene, is mainly running dialogue about what is going on on the outside, and what to do about it. A local doctor makes his way to the radio station, and seems to figure out the whole thing pretty fast.
You can take the movie as pure horror, a satire about the media, or maybe even somewhat a comedy. I didn't take it as a comedy, I think the dialogue is intriguing as hell, and formulates a very intelligent script.
I highly recommend this little jewel, and the commentary is very good and also very funny.
