Review of Pontypool (2009) by Dylan N — 06 Nov 2011
How I just now saw this movie is beyond me. Should've been at the top of my list 2 years ago.
An old shock jock finds himself working at a radio station in the small quiet town of Pontypool, Ontario. Whilst trying to shake things up on his first day, a zombie outbreak erupts. Residents call in describing what's happening on the outside but our dj, producer and assistant remain locked in the studio.
What is both so intelligent and shocking about this low budget flick is the claustrophobia of it all. The whole film takes place at the radio station. Hell, it almost all takes place in a cramped sound room. Yet somehow, the tension and suspense manage to remain intact throughout, NEARLY, the entirety of the movie.
Without giving anything away, I will say that the way the "zombie" infection spreads is unlike anything you have witnessed in the genre to date. It feels so fresh and unique and is, sadly, the film's one downfall. The futility of finding a cure for this plague not only settles in on the characters on screen, but the writer himself. There is no way to fix it and all attempts feel foolish and lead to a bit of an underwhelming conclusion. Though I will say this: stick with it through the credits; what transpires is pretty genius.
