Review of Pontypool (2009) by Messiah R — 24 Aug 2012
In a genre better known for being visually visceral, PONTYPOOL makes a unique departure from the graphic gore-fest that is the undead/infected category. Instead, this tale of a radio broadcaster caught in the midst of a deadly virus outbreak in a small Canadian town plays out as a claustrophobic psychological thriller, relying heavily on dialogue and suggestion; a direction that will prove divisive.
But when words give way to action and blood is finally shown â" what little there is â" the effect is amplified due to the measured, meditated build-up. Though an interesting premise, the feature is ultimately let down by unconvincing plot points and, ironically, overburdened exchanges.
