Review of Pontypool (2009) by Corey P — 22 Jul 2009
I thought it was just okay as a whole, and feel it was a bit overhyped by it's champions. While I think it had some interesting ideas/concepts, I didn't think they were well executed from beginning to end, and storywise and characterwise there were a number of scenes that fell kinda flat, even kinda stupid. In particular the 'kiss kill' stuff... I didn't feel like those two had very good chemistry with each other. I didn't dig the actual zombie stuff in the movie at all. The strongest part of the movie is the first 40 minutes or so before stuff really starts hitting the fan.
So if I were to pontificate on a few things though - I guess I got an impression from the opening monologue that understanding the city name of "Pontypool" is one of the things that could have set this whole thing off, backed up by the repetition of it during the credits. I got the impression from the stinger that they were keeping alive/uninfected by not making any sense, and he has to shush her for using that understandable term of endearment.
Anyways 3/5, not quite the hidden gem I was expecting but not bad. I'm not particularly interested in the other movies they plan on making.
